Nervous System

The electrochemical command network coordinating thought, sensation, movement, and automatic function.

Overview

The nervous system comprises the brain (86 billion neurons), spinal cord, and an enormous peripheral network. The brain consumes 20% of the body's energy while representing only 2% of its mass. Its 100 trillion synaptic connections form a structure more complex than any engineered system in existence.

The renewing mind, seat of spiritual transformation

The Greek nous (mind/reason) is the target of Paul's command: "be transformed by the renewing of your mind" (Rom 12:2). This is not emotional renewal but noetic, a change in the rational faculty that perceives and evaluates reality. The biblical mind is not opposed to faith but is its primary instrument.

"Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind."

Romans 12:2 (BSB)

"But we have the mind of Christ."

1 Corinthians 2:16 (BSB)

"You will keep in perfect peace the steadfast of mind, because he trusts in You."

Isaiah 26:3 (BSB)
