Musculoskeletal System

The structural framework and movement engine, supporting, protecting, and mobilising the body.

Overview

The adult skeleton comprises 206 bones, consolidated from ~300 at birth. Skeletal muscle accounts for 35-40% of body weight and is the only voluntarily controlled muscle type. Bone is a dynamic living tissue: osteoblasts build new matrix while osteoclasts resorb old bone. The entire skeleton is replaced approximately every 7-10 years.

Bones as identity, kinship, and innermost substance

The Hebrew etzem (bone) carries remarkable metaphorical weight. Adam's recognition of Eve, 'bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh' (Gen 2:23), is the first recorded expression of human kinship. In the Psalms, bones become the vehicle for most intense inner anguish (Ps 22:14, 31:10) and deepest joy (Ps 51:8). Ezekiel's valley of dry bones (Ezek 37) uses skeletal anatomy as the ultimate metaphor for national resurrection, the most dramatic display of God's renewing power in the entire OT.

"This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called "woman," for out of man she was taken."

Genesis 2:23 (BSB)

"Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones You have crushed rejoice."

Psalm 51:8 (BSB)

"Dry bones, hear the word of the LORD!"

Ezekiel 37:4 (BSB)
