Cardiovascular System

The body's transport network, pumping blood, oxygen, and nutrients throughout the organism.

Overview

The cardiovascular system consists of the heart, blood vessels, and approximately 5 litres of blood. The heart beats roughly 100,000 times per day, circulating blood through 60,000 miles of vessels. This system is responsible for oxygen delivery, nutrient transport, waste removal, and immune surveillance.

Centre of will, intellect, and moral life

In Hebrew anthropology, lev (heart) encompasses the intellect, will, emotion, and moral centre simultaneously. Solomon's prayer for a "hearing heart" (1 Kgs 3:9) requested discernment, not feeling. When God promises a "new heart" (Ezek 36:26), He promises total inner renovation, a word-picture of spiritual renewal, not a medical procedure, though the modern heart transplant (first performed successfully by Barnard in 1967) is a striking echo of the image.

"Guard your heart with all diligence, for from it flow springs of life."

Proverbs 4:23 (BSB)

"I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you."

Ezekiel 36:26 (BSB)

"Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind."

Matthew 22:37 (BSB)
